Back in April, Square Enix announced a roster of new Kingdom Hearts games for their 20th anniversary. However, the news surrounding the beloved franchise has been relatively sparse since then. Dark Road came and went with little fanfare despite its compelling narrative. Recently, the company announced a prototype test of the upcoming mobile game Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link on iOS smartphones.

The beta test is open to players in Japan, 18 years or older. Square Enix is planning to cap the number of testers at 1000. If more than 1000 applicants apply, testers will be chosen from a lottery system instead of on a first come, first served basis. Testers will be responsible for pointing out bugs to the developers. The deadline to sign up for the prototype is December 26. The test will run from January 13 to 18 in Japan.

Safety features on the game’s official website reveal a few more details. The game is designed around the Pokemon GO model, with the map mirroring real-life locations. It will also include a hands-free mode for automatic battles as well as recovery of HP and MP. There’s no release date for the game yet, but the short window for the test may imply a sooner release date.

Although this test is only for iOS users in Japan, Square Enix released a new piece of artwork for the game to tide over fans. The art shows a crowded city plaza in Scala Ad Caelum. A group of figures in Organization XIII coats can be seen on the stars in the background. The central focus of the artwork is a figure standing in the center of the plaza with a keyblade in hand. The chain on the keyblade is reminiscent of the Dream Eater symbol but features an X shape instead of a heart. Until further news, Kingdom Hearts fans outside of Japan will have to content themselves with this new artwork.
