Ahead of their big panel tomorrow afternoon, several behind the scenes higher-ups of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy sat down with Entertainment Weekly to talk about the show. They kept their biggest reveals intact for tomorrow, but their discussions still shone a light on several elements of the production.

The show, set for release in 2026, is set after the events of Star Trek: Discovery, and locates itself in the 32nd century, in a bold, strange future Discovery did considerable worldbuilding for. The story is centered on the titular Starfleet Academy as the organization is revitalized in the wake of Discovery, and focuses on Sandro Rosta, who plays a new cadet who makes a connection with Holly Hunter’s character, who is both a Starfleet captain and chancellor of the Academy. A number of other actors also fill out the cast Rosta will be surrounded by as fellow cadets, including Karim Diané and George Hawkins.

The showrunners promise a look at a diverse array of existing Star Trek aliens, but also note the new additions, including a hybrid species of Klingon that might have a link to Paul Giamatti’s mysterious villain. The showrunners were very vague, but it was Giamatti’s constant mentions of wanting to play a Klingon while on the press tour for The Holdovers that led to him being contacted and involved with the project.

Showrunner Noga Landau also noted how the show will try to speak to a generation of kids growing up in a tough world, and that the show will feature a diversity of genres episode to episode as different storylines come into play.

Plenty more information, including character names and likely a trailer, probably await fans on the afternoon of Saturday, July 26th.
