The Ronin will return in the third season of Star Wars: Visions, which premiered on October 29. In previous seasons, the Ronin and his astromech B5-56 defend a Genbara village from a Sith named Kouru. The villagers mistook him for a Jedi until he revealed that he is actually a Sith hunting Dark Side users. The character’s popularity launched a novel and a limited-run comic. Now, the team at Kamikaze Douga and Star Wars: Visions filmmakers released a YouTube featurette focused on the character’s return in the episode “The Duel: Payback.”

The video shows fully realized animations in black and white with little pops of color during lightsaber battles. Designer Takashi Okazaki brings elements of Japanese feudalism into the Star Wars universe. This mashup trend continues in the episode with a gambling den built from two Imperial walkers and Ginzin-inspired elements. The inspiration for this den came from the floating Kayawuka terraces in Kyoto on the Kamo River. Boss Oyabun Que-Dama runs this establishment with his Wookie Enforcer FZBOL. Oyabun sports traditional Gakubori tattoos. This is the setting for the opening duel between the Ronin and a Twi’lek Sith Warrior named Anee-san, who blends the established lightsaber combat with elements of a female samurai. The episode will treat the Jedi as crusaders under the leadership of the Grand Master.

In order to create the world, Kamikaze Douga traveled to northern Japan to research the area where the Ronin will recover in a Bacta Spring. Director Takanobu Mizuno filmed some of the scenes in live-action to give animators a reference in motion for the duel between the Ronin and the Grandmaster. “The Duel: Payback” and the entire third season of Star Wars: Visions are currently available on Disney+.
