The recently formed Skydance - the result of the merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery - has some of the most recognizable IPs under its belt, like Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, DC, or Star Trek.

One of these IPs is Transformers, and the company is keen to keep this cinematic franchise, which started in 2007, alive.

In August 2025, Paramount Pictures co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg met with Steven Spielberg to discuss his involvement in the eighth live-action feature of the franchise, which has earned more than $5.4 billion at the global box office to date.

Spielberg has been executive producer on the first Transformers movies and steered their creative direction together with long-term producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. And while Spielberg was less involved in the later Transformers movies, the executives at Skydance want the famous director and di Bonaventura to return to a more active role with a focus on all creative aspects of the upcoming film in hopes of reigniting the spirit of the earlier films that was somehow missing from the more recent entries of the franchise.

Still, discussions between Paramount and Spielberg dragged on into 2026, and it was only after Spielberg had read the script, which is written by Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman, It - Chapter Two).

Spielberg also suggested Michael Bay as director for the first Transformers movie in 2007. He went on to also helm its two direct sequels (Revenge of the Fallen, 2009 and Dark of the Moon, 2011) as well as Age of Extinction (2014) and The Last Knight (2017), so the 61-year-old from Los Angeles is Skydance’s obvious first choice as the director for the new movie. Again, Fuch’s script brought Bay on board, though contract negotiations are still in the early stages.

Hardly anything is known about the plot of the movie yet, other than it will be set in the present day. As a result, no casting or release date for the new Transformers movie has been announced.
