A teaser trailer for the next Tohu kaiju movie has been released, revealing Godzilla Minus One to the world. Set in post-war Japan, this new movie will see the titular monster be a formidable threat to civilization, still recovering from the horrors of that war. Along with the teaser trailer, a poster has also been released.

This new movie will be the first live-action Godzilla produced in Japan since 2016’s Shin Godzilla. During that time, Legendary Pictures have been producing more in their branch of Godzilla films, including Godzilla vs. Kong, throughout those years. Though the American movies have their fans, there’s something special about those that come from the franchise’s country of origin. The director of film at the Japan Society explains,

“There’s 70 years of stories that inform the Japanese films and influence their production. Even when a Japanese film does something radical with the character, it’s with intent, and this context carries a lot of weight. And visually, the acting, directing, and special effects – often done very practically – are also dramatically different than what’s seen in US films.”

Directed and written by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One, the next in the Reiwa era of the franchise, will debut in Japan on November 3, 2023, with a theatrical release in the US on December 1.
