A grittier TMNT roleplay game aimed at mature audiences is coming. It will be based on a 2020 comic miniseries titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. In an interview with Polygon, Paramount Senior VP for games and emerging media Doug Rosen talked about the details of the game. He indicated the RPG to be similar to Sony’s God of War series.

Rosen said the game will stay true to the source material.  He included that, under Paramount, they can take “multiple approaches [to the franchise], and not dial back to make the game something it shouldn’t be.” The comic series it is based on, written by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, Tom Waltz, and Andy Kuhn, took a darker approach to the TMNT universe.

A rōnin was a samurai who, by fault of loss, misdeed, or the death of their lord, was masterless and generally brought a rebellious spirit wherever they went. The Last Ronin is set in a dark future where all but one of the brothers as well as Master Splinter are killed. The remaining Turtle is responsible for finishing what they started, defeating Shredder’s grandson, and releasing the tight grip on his city. To name which brother survives would likely be a spoiler for the game as this was a major plot point in the comics.

The game won’t be released for a while yet, Rosen said it’s a “few years off.” This is some of the darkest TMNT content coming, but it’s not the only thing; in the meantime, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is an upcoming comedy origin film for a new generation of TMNT fans. It hits theaters on August 4th, 2023.
