The Golden Globes will return to NBC in 2023 after stories broke last year about their voting organization, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The nominees of the 80th Golden Globes were announced at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, by Mayan Lopez and Selenis Leyva of the NBC Comedy, Lopez vs. Lopez. The 27 categories each contain five nominees. There are separate categories for comedies and musicals, and dramas so that there can be a broader range of winners.

The Banshees of Inisherin led the nominees with eight nods, including best picture. The hit movie, Everything Everywhere All at Once followed behind with six nominees. The Fabelmans, Babylon, and Elvis came next with five nominees each. The five movies nominated for best drama include Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tár, Top Gun: Maverick, and the newest James Cameron film, Avatar: The Way of Water. The movies nominated for best comedy or musical include Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, Babylon, Triangle of Sadness, and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

The Golden Globes are not just limited to movies, but also include television series. The hit comedy, Abbott Elementary led the way in television shows with five nominations, including best television series: musical or comedy. The White Lotus, Dahmer, The Crown, Pam and Tommy, and Only Murders in the Building scored four nominations. The Crown joins Better Call Saul, Ozark, House of the Dragon, and Severance in competition for the best television series (drama).

Some surprises included no nominations for Will Smith for best actor for his role in the new movie, Emancipation. The hit Amazon Prime series, The Rings of Power, also failed to score any nominations. Brendan Fraser was nominated for best actor for his role in The Whale but will not attend the show due to his history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The entirety of the best director category is comprised of men, even though two female directors, Sarah Polley (Women Talking) and Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), had some of the most critically acclaimed movies this year. Baz Lurhmann is nominated for his work on Elvis, James Cameron for Avatar: Way of Water, and the “Daniels” (Daniel Scheiner and Daniel Kwan) for Everything Everywhere All at Once, all going up against Steven Speilberg and Martin McDonagh for the best director trophy.
