Amidst the absolute tidal wave of recent news regarding layoffs occurring at Microsoft, a different, smaller, but no less concerning announcement hit elsewhere in the gaming landscape.
Developer Unknown Worlds announced on July 2nd that Studio CEO Ted Gill, Subnautica game director Charlie Cleveland, and technical director Max McGuire had all left the company. These startling departures come without any warning, with a statement from the studio’s parent company, Krafton, noting that the departures were “effective immediately” with well wishes on the trio’s future endeavors.
Krafton’s statement also welcomed Steve Papoutsis, CEO of Striking Distance Studios, as the new CEO of Unknown Worlds. They expressed total confidence in his ability to oversee the studio given his years of experience, and believe he is capable of helping the studio deliver Subnautica 2 to the eager playerbase.
The original Subnautica was enjoyed by many players, part of the still ongoing interest in crafting-survival games, while the spinoff, Subnautica: Below Zero, saw somewhat less success. Unknown Worlds originally had a plan to release some version of Subnautica 2 in 2024, but now has a planned early access launch for sometime in 2025. This substantial leadership change may see plans shift yet again. Nothing has currently been announced, and Krafton appears confident in the studio pushing ahead, but we’ll have to wait and see.
