In a surprise move, Aspyr shadow-dropped a remastered version of The Lord of the Rings: The War in the North, now titled with an added Legacy Edition. There’s more to the surprise drop, however, as with a press release, there was a tease of more The Lord of the Rings game remasters on the way from Aspyr. In their press release, it says that “The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition…is the first The Lord of the Rings title released by Aspyr," and further adds that "Fans can look forward to even more classic releases by Aspyr from the beloved franchise in the future!"

Aspyr is well known for their work in remastering games; in fact, they were the first studio to try and tackle the remake of Knights of the Old Republic. They lost that role, however, to Saber Interactive after a rumored horrible showing. Regardless, Aspyr has brought several titles to the Switch, so there’s a chance that the Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War games could be coming to the Switch 2 with this news. Fans would also love to see remakes or remasters of the PS2-era games that were movie tie-ins, especially the Return of the King tie-in.

If you’re unfamiliar with the game, it gets its name from the parallel storyline that Tolkien refers to in his books through character comments and the appendices. In the movies, Legolas tells Gimli that he fears war marches on Dwarven lands, referring to the Dwarven strongholds in the north. The fortress of Angmar, where the leader of the Nine, the Witch King of Angmar, held power, is the focal point of the War in the North. This game uses tie-ins to the books and the movies as if follows a man, a dwarf, and an elf as they take on the forces of Sauron in the north of Middle-earth.

The game is available now on Steam.
