In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Tony Gilroy discussed the characters of Star Wars: Andor, season 2, and even dropped a hint about who might not make it to the end. Spoilers ahead.
Tony Gilroy feels great affection even for the villains, seeing the viewpoints of Syril, Dedra, and Perrin. Eedy Karn, Syril’s bossy Mom, is one of his favorites. “We wanna do a supercut of just her. That’s what we gotta do. Just the Eedy Show.” But Gilroy says that he had struggled to get her voice right initially. However, once the British actor Kathryn Hunter came in and read the mock scenes, she immediately became larger than life.
Cassian starts to reveal himself as a leader in the first three episodes, and Tony Gilroy’s arc is pushing him towards Rogue One, where he is entrenched enough to lead a team to steal the Death Star plans. The scene on Yavin IV where Cassian goes up against a band of chaotic rebels was inspired by a family dinner. “So I wrote the parts for them and they ended up playing the two parts. That’s my son and my niece’s husband, the two guys on opposite sides. And it comes from a drunken dinner. And they’re not dumb men! They can behave dumb. They’re very entertaining at dinner. So I wrote it for them.”

If you’ve been waiting for a cameo of Darth Vader or Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: Andor, you’re going to be disappointed. It’s unlikely there’s going to be a mention of the Sith at all. Andor is for everyday members of the galaxy rather than force users.
But Gilroy did drop a hint about Lutheran Rael when discussing the rogue antiques trader, he said. “All revolutions have these firebrand, deeply committed, terrifying people that get sh*t done that are not there at the goal line. They don’t make it to the end.” So it looks as if Stellan Skarsgård’s character won’t survive past Star Wars: Andor. Don’t cry, don’t cry, don’t cry.
