June 5 gets closer every day, the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. Pre-orders for third party retailers went off disastrously, with long queue times, dropped orders, and all manner of disappointment by fans looking to get an order in. Nintendo’s official pre-order invites don’t go out until May 8, and that’s if you happen to qualify for their pre-order, and if you get an invite through the raffle of those who qualify.
Despite all that, some market analysts think it will be the largest game console launch in history. Pelham Smithers Associates, a research firm focused on Japan, thinks that due to Japan being a “third of the global Switch installation base”, we could see 6.6 million global pre-orders. This comes off a comment by Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa that 2.2 million people in Japan applied through Nintendo’s pre-order process, and that a significant amount of people will miss out on pre-orders.

Still, if they’re accounting for Japan being a third of the global market, and there were 2.2 million applications for Japan alone, the 6.6 million figure is significantly higher than the PlayStation 4 and 5’s 4.5 million units for the first two months on the market. If this number holds, it will certainly be one for the record books.
