Following Ubisoft’s recent announcement of job cuts across multiple studios, tensions among employees have reached a breaking point. The company revealed that 55 roles would be eliminated across Massive Entertainment and its Stockholm teams, while a broader round of layoffs would affect 185 workers at Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Stockholm, Ubisoft Reflections, and Ubisoft Leamington, the latter of which is closing permanently. In response, the newly formed union representing French Ubisoft employees has confirmed an international strike scheduled from February 10th to the 12th. This action is a direct response to the company’s latest “major organizational, operational, and portfolio reset,” which aims to save an additional 200 million euros through a combination of layoffs and project cancellations. Workers have expressed deep frustration and see it as a necessary stand to demand fair treatment and to protest the increasingly harsh working conditions at one of France’s largest AAA game studios.

“Hundreds of employees who thought the worst was over are now facing a huge amount of uncertainty, not knowing if their work-life balance will even be sustainable under Ubisoft a year from now,” Marc Rutschlé said. “Yves Guillemot has decided, against the advice of everyone he consulted, that remote work is a problem that needs to be fixed. And because the company needs to find 200 million euros this year, anyone who feels forced to leave is treated as a bonus. We’re constantly reminded about responsibility, yet those who throw that word around refuse to take responsibility for the consequences of their mismanagement. The result is 200 jobs cut at Ubisoft’s headquarters. Instead of owning the financial impact, management is making working conditions so unbearable that people leave on their own. Our colleagues endure this out of solidarity, out of love for the industry, and passion for their craft, but enough is enough!” he added.

This strike comes as Ubisoft continues a steady decline that has affected both its finances and its relationship with players. Over the past several years, the company has faced repeated setbacks, including delayed releases, canceled projects, and falling stock prices. The latest wave of layoffs and cancellations caused Ubisoft shares to drop 34%, and the company now expects net bookings of around 1.5 billion euros for the financial year ending 2026, 330 million euros less than last year. Meanwhile, employees are standing up for themselves, refusing to accept working conditions they see as unfair, and highlighting the growing tension between Ubisoft’s creative teams and its executive leadership as the company navigates a challenging period in its history.
