It’s the year of Darth Maul for Star Wars fans. Not only does the character have an animated series releasing later this year, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, he gets his own comic as a direct tie-in. The comic is titled Star Wars: Shadow of Maul and is written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Madibek Musabekov. Percy is no stranger to the Star Wars Universe, having written both Star Wars: Darth Maul - Black, White, & Red and Star Wars: Boba Fett - Black, White & Red. The former was a horror read, a rarity for the franchise. This new comic, however, will take its inspiration from a different genre- a crime noir set in the city of Janix. Percy elaborates, “My two favorite Star Wars stories are Andor and Rogue One. And that’s because they’re grounded in realism. We’re taking a similar approach here. And this city is more than a stage—it’s a character in itself. Steam hisses from vents, billowing the air. Neon burnishes the night. Trash dirties the gutters. Lawson pops his collar and shoulders forward through the rain-drenched crowds. It’s all very noir.”
The comic will tell the story of Darth Maul and two characters destined to become his enemies, that is ex-bounty hunter turned police detective Captain Lawson and his droid Two-Boots. Percy explains further, “The stage is Janix, a shadow-soaked, neon-lit city controlled by crime syndicates. Lawson used to be a bounty hunter. Now he’s a cop and a single dad doing the best he can in a lawless territory. He [sic] a good man who pushes limits and breaks rules. And he’s joined by his partner, a droid named Two-Boots, who is loyal, warm, and a bit of a stickler.” The comic releases on March 4, 2026.
