John Carpenter’s classic film, Escape From New York, is set to be remade for modern audiences. Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind films such as Rebel Moonand Zack Snyder’s Justice League, will be the writer and director of the project. This will be the first time in many years an Escape From New York film has been set up for production

Sources from The Hollywood Reporter also state that Carpenter will serve as an executive producer, as he controls the rights to the property along with StudioCanal. Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman of The Picture Company will produce through a deal made with StudioCanal. Snyder is also one of the producers, along with partners from his Stone Quarry production company, Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller.

When taking the rights for the film, StudioCanal has made Escape From New York a priority, with it being mentioned at their CinemaCon presentation earlier this year. It has been working to be a big name with franchises such as Paddington and Evil Dead, with Escape From New York being another big name they want to utilise.

Released in 1981, the original Escape From New York saw a future Manhattan turned into a maximum security island prison. With the President of the United States crash-landing in the prison, holding sensitive information, he needs to escape with the help of former military hero-turned-outlaw Plissken. Starring Kurt Russell as Plissken, it proved successful enough that Carpenter made a sequel in 1996 titled Escape From L.A.
