Creating a show from scratch is a titanic project. Millions of small details get overlooked as a spectator: from the writing involved, to the recordings and sound to the editing process. Animation is no exception to this, the precision of animating every frame, every movement, and expression from every character in the scene not to mention the background details. Created by Vivienne Medrano, Hazbin Hotel is a magnificent piece of animation aimed at mature audiences that shows how much hard work and love toward a project can result in something truly mesmerizing.

The show begins with Charlie, the princess of Hell, singing and grieving the ongoing exterminations in her kingdom. Hell is overpopulated and, every year, demons fight one another to reduce population and gain power and territory in the aftermath. Charlie wishes to stop that meaningless massacre thus she creates the “Happy Hotel”.

Charlie, with the help of Vaggie, is ready to present her new project on a news channel, a hotel to rehabilitate sinners and send them to Heaven. Unfortunately, not a single soul shows interest in her hotel, they even make fun of her for believing in redemption. Charlie shares they already have a guest who is looking for redemption, the one and only Angel Dust. Not a second goes by when notice of Angel Dust being part of the ongoing battle in the city arrives and Charlie’s credibility hits a new rock bottom.

With their spirits crushed, Charlie and Vaggie return to the Hotel (after picking up Angel Dust). Once there a new character presents himself, Alastor, the Radio Demon. He states he wishes to help Charlie, not because he believes in her cause but for his own entertainment; nonetheless, he follows through with his promise to help, invoking other demons (Niffty and Husker) to serve as hotel staff and protecting the hotel from threats showcasing his insane power.

And just like that, we meet the complete gang, surely an exciting group full of weirdness and fun. Currently, the only chapter available is the pilot. However, earlier this year the creator confirmed that the show would continue in late summer. Fans expect a lot from this show, especially after waiting for a second episode for over 3 years.

The animation style is captivating, the character designs interesting in every single one, add the catchy songs and the story is truly promising to bring some good laughs (and maybe some cries too).

This episode, and all upcoming ones, can be found on the creator’s YouTube channel Vivziepop. And, in Alastor’s words “now, stay tuned”.
