Loki is burdened with a glorious purpose – his friends. At the conclusion of the previous episode, viewers witnessed what appeared to be the end of the line for the TVA. The temporal radiation proved to be too much and literally ate Victor Timely alive. Clearly, with two episodes left, there is not much time to spare (all puns intended). Episode 5, titled “Science/Fiction” opens with Loki seemingly stepping back into his body. He is alone in the TVA and his Time Slipping has returned. At the onset, he cannot control it as it picks him up and drops him in an array of branched timelines.

None of his crew know who they are, who Loki is, or anything about the Time Variance Authority, except of course for Sylvie in 1982 Broxton, Oklahoma. She still works at McDonald's, but we’ll get to that in just a minute. First, let's break down the locations and timelines. Casey or Frank as he is known in 1962, San Francisco, California on the island of Alcatraz is the first stop.

Next up is 2012, New York, New York, with Hunter B-15, who is a doctor in this version of herself. Mobius has finally entered the jet ski business in Cleveland, Ohio – 2022. Oh, and by the way, he is a single dad with two kids, and he thinks his name is Don. O.B. is a theoretical physicist who resigned from teaching in the field at Caltech to write science fiction novels in Pasadena, California, in 1994. O.B. serves to bring things full circle once again, illustrating his namesake as he works with Loki to learn how to control his Time Slipping and then get the “band back together.”

Initially, O.B. believes that Loki must figure out why he needs to save the TVA to control his Time Slipping. We learn later that the control cannot be found in the why, when, or where of the equation. Loki gives him a copy of the TVA manual, and O.B. works on re-inventing the TemPad. First, Loki goes to Mobius. He convinces him to help by explaining to him that it is necessary to save his boys while assuring him that he can come back to them with no passage of time at all. Loki then convinces Hunter B-15 and Casey easily. The heroes begin gathering at O.B.’s when all that is left to fully assemble the crew is Sylvie.

Loki expects that Sylvie will need to be brought up to speed like the others did…he is incorrect. She knows everything in real time and still has her TemPad. After taking him to get a drink, Sylvie uncovers why Loki needs to save the TVA so badly. The former poster god for mischief, mayhem, and no attachments realizes that he needs to save the TVA to bring his friends back and that he doesn’t want to be alone. This leaves him feeling selfish. He leaves Sylvie to live the life she wants and returns to 1994 to send his friends back to where they belong on their timelines. This is when the unthinkable begins to happen.

Flash to Sylvie at a record store as her timeline dies. Then, back to Loki, where his friends meet the same fate. Sylvie shows up, but it’s too late to stop the event. This is the defining moment of Loki’s arc as he desperately grabs at the loom as it circulates, devouring the contents of the space. The moment he concentrates on the people he loves is when he Time Slips. The camera flashes him in and out of time and space before settling back moments ahead of the event, that takes his friends. He tells them he can control his Time Slipping. The answer was never in the why, when, or where…but in the who. One final frame shows him slipping back to the temporal loom room before the last events viewers witnessed in episode 4.

The clock is ticking; with one more episode left in the season, Loki must race against time…for time. Don’t forget to catch the season finale of Loki on Disney+ next Thursday at 9 p.m. (ET) or 8 p.m. (CST)!
