“We Find Out The Truth, Sort Of” is the penultimate episode of the first season of Percy Jackson and The Olympians. The episode is one of the most emotional ones by far but still makes for an exciting time.

The trio heads to the Underworld to rescue Percy’s mom. The episode starts with the familiar scene of Crusty’s Waterbeds. Crusty is played by Julian Richings, who does an amazing job of bringing this character to life. The trio can get past his tricks, and find their way into the Underworld. Of course, it’s not easy to just waltz into the Underworld when you’re still alive, so the trio had to get creative. On their journey to Hades, they encounter Chiron, and Cerberus, and have to walk through the Asphodel Fields. They also stumble across Tartarus, and figure out who stole Zeus’s master bolt.

Eventually, they make their way to Hades’ palace, where they meet the God himself. He is not how I pictured him at all, and even a bit likable. After talking with Hades, and getting nowhere, they use their pearls to go back above, and a familiar God enters the picture. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, but book fans know what will happen next. This episode uses a lot of different mythology when it comes to the Underworld, and it’s quite fun trying to identify everything.

One of the best parts of this series has been the flashbacks. With the books being from Percy’s POV, we only get to experience what The show has expanded on that, by including more of Sally Jackson. We know she cares for Percy, but has a hard time anytime he is kicked out of school. She wants what’s best for him, and will even send him away to a school that can hopefully help him. One of the best flashback scenes came from this episode. After having lunch with Percy, she is broken up about sending him away, but in comes Poseidon and the two have a heart-to-heart. Even though he’s Percy’s father, we don’t see much of him until the later books. This was a great addition to the story we already know and added more depth to Percy’s story as well.

The scenes in this episode were some of the coolest. The Underworld was terrifying and void of color, which makes sense considering it’s the Underworld. The Asphodel Fields were scary and are not a place you would want to end up in after you die, even though that is where the majority of souls go. Tartarus was a big pit in the ground, and like everything else in the Underworld, besides Elysium, it was terrifying. Hades palace is upside down and let’s just say there would be worse places to be trapped in the Underworld. There doesn’t seem much to it in the way of the interior, and it’s quite empty, but it’s the perfect place for Hades.

This has been a wonderful adaptation so far. The changes that have been made have made the story more exciting for book fans, and have always worked out in the end. Even though I have read the books, and know what happens, I cannot wait to see how the finale plays out on screen.
