Warning: Spoilers Ahead

The Percy Jackson & The Olympians television series may be a faithful adaptation but it departs from the traditional book narrative. However, the showrunners managed to throw in several Easter eggs to delight book fans.

Episodes 1 & 2

Ares’ cabin with their spiked helmets

In the season premiere, Percy mentions that Sally is the only other one who can see Tyson’s true form. This references Sally’s ability to see through the mist, which comes not from the original Percy Jackson series but from a new book The Wrath of the Triple Goddess. In this book, Sally’s past as a potential candidate for Hecate’s magic school is revealed. However, these adventures didn’t materialize as the school was closed at the time.

In Episode 2, we’re treated to subtle designs on the helmets in the chariot race that call to mind each god or goddess’s abilities. The Ares kids have a singular spike on their helmet reminiscent of a spear, referencing his offensive, attack-first nature. The Athena kids have a triangular crown on their helmets. This mathematically perfect design calls to mind not only cleverness but also her being the goddess of crafts and civilization. The Hephaestus kids have goggles, and their chariot is powered by steam, calling to mind his skills as a craftsman. The Hermes kids have wings on their helmets and chariots, referencing the sandals he wore in the mythology and the pair of shoes from the first season. Finally, the Poseidon kids have a single blue mane on their helmets. This seems very generic until you remember that Poseidon created horses, which Percy helpfully mentions earlier in the episode.

Episode 3

Alison with her bow

When Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson reach the Princess Andromeda in the third episode, they encounter Alison Simms. Alison is shown reading a Bowhuntress magazine. This calls back to her weapon of choice in the premiere. But more so, it provides some genius foreshadowing. A lot of the season depends on Thalia’s choices, and book fans will know one major choice involves a bow and arrow, but I won’t spoil that here.

Episode 4

In the fourth episode, the Easter egg comes in a flashback. In Luke and Thalia’s hideout, there’s a box of Monster Donuts cereal with a hydra mascot. This calls back to a plot point in the book, where a monster-run chain called Monster Donuts has a new store pop up every time the hydra loses one of its heads. The box includes an image of the charm, which the series, keeping with the cereal theme, dubs Kelloggia’s Charm.

Episode 5

The Easter egg in the fifth episode comes in the form of the cameo. After Percy and Annabeth wake up, they are greeted by Hylla. While she was canonically working there during this time in the books, Percy never encountered her. He meets her much later in the Percy Jackson sequel book series The Heroes of Olympus. In that series, she’s a fierce Amazonian warrior, but on C.C.’s island in the TV series, she’s still a warm, kind soul.

Episode 7

The Mythomagic card game makes it return in Episode 7. In the first season, Grover used the cards to teach Percy about Greek mythology discreetly, and in the books, it’s a favorite game of Nico’s, who’s set to star in the third season. Another Easter egg in this episode also points to a future character. Towards the end of the episode, Sally pulls up in a blue Prius with a “I’d Rather Be Teaching” bumper sticker. Percy asks about the car, implying it belongs to someone else. Book fans will recognize the car as belonging to Paul Blofis, but TV viewers will have to wait until next season to learn more about him.

Episode 8

In the books, nectar and ambrosia has powerful healing abilities from demigods but have been generally absent from the series. Grover mentions it in the finale, indicating that it’s always been present, but the series hasn’t focused on it. In this episode’s stinger, C.C. has statues made of Percy and Annabeth to give heroes more hope of leaving the island. This counts as an Easter egg and character development, as she didn’t wait for all hope to be lost, nor did she help Percy and Annabeth cheat.

That’s all the Easter eggs of the season. Eager fans won’t have to wait too much longer to look for more, as the third season, based on The Titan’s Curse, is set to release later this year.
