Warning: Spoilers Ahead
The latest episode of Percy Jackson & The Olympians hit all the right notes. We open with a young Annabeth and Luke at Camp with Chiron, explaining Thalia’s sacrifice. At the end of the vision, the tree on the border of the camp glows gold, and Annabeth wakes up, still under the fleece but tied to the bed. Then, we transition to a crowded dock in Long Island, where one of Luke’s demigods, Aidan, is ambushed by Percy, Clarisse, Grover, and Tyson. Tyson employs the old cyclops trick of mimicking voices to lure Aidan with Alison’s voice. Then we see some friction in the group about what to rescue first. Percy insists on getting Annabeth first, while Clarisse says the fleece is all that matters. They separate ways with two goals in mind, while Grover and Tyson are tasked with finding a ride back to camp.
In a new development, Percy has hold of Annabeth’s Yankees cap, letting him use the power of invisibility for the first time. While this season has been rather lacking in showing Percy’s offensive powers with water, it has subtly suggested other Poseidon-esque traits. On the dock, Percy hears Luke’s Pegasus Blackjack whinnying. He traps one of Luke’s demigods in a concession stand and goes to talk to Blackjack. The episode never outright shows or explains it, but it’s heavily implied that this is where Percy discovers he can talk to horses. Poseidon is the father of horses in Greek mythology, after all. Tyson’s constant speaking to and about Rainbow during the season provided some foreshadowing of this ability.

Percy reveals himself to Annabeth, and she reveals that the fleece can heal the tree and potentially bring Thalia back. They hear Luke coming, and Percy turns invisible. Annabeth tries to appeal to Luke’s better nature, and at this point, I’ve lost track of how many times she’s tried this. The show goes out of its way to emphasize that Luke is not the enemy, but Kronos is. Annabeth reveals that the fleece can bring Thalia back. Luke isn’t convinced, but Annbeth says all he has to do is “leave, grab the fleece, and bring it back to me.” The show wastes no time in showing that Percy understood Annabeth’s message was to him, and the door swings open by itself.
Meanwhile, Clarisse gets some character development. As she heads toward the fleece, she’s forced to stop as the group of rogue demigods and a Laestrygonian gather to play Mythomagic, a callback both to the first season, where Grover uses Mythomagic cards to teach Percy about the Greek world, and the first episode of Season 2, where the Laestrygonians chase the heroes into camp. Alison comes in and recruits them to kill the traitor, Annabeth. Grover and Tyson are there to provide limited comic relief as they try to find a ride. Tyson hotwires a truck before they realize that none of them can actually drive. When Tyson suggests Percy drive, Grover hits back with a hard no in another callback to the first season. They eventually call Sally, who immediately picks up that something is wrong. Sally is grocery shopping while speaking to them, and the store clerk hears him mention something about being a mother to both a demigod and a cyclops in another much-needed moment of brevity.
Back on Luke’s ship, Percy and Clarisse have essentially traded places. Percy is going after the fleece, which Alison left unguarded, to carry out her mission of attacking Annabeth. The group nearly gets her, too, until Clarisse shows up and takes out the Laestrygonian from behind. They defeat Alison’s crew, and Clarisse and Annabeth share a bonding moment.
As Percy heads for the fleece, Kronos tries to appeal to his worst nature, in a parallel of Annabeth’s speech to Luke earlier. He offers to tell Percy the Great Prophecy in exchange for leaving the fleece where it ends. To show he’s telling the truth, he recites the first two lines until Percy snatches the fleece. Luke shows up and they swordfight. A big picture window showing the ocean is a stark reminder that Percy has used his power over water exactly once this season. Kronos’ sarcophagus starts to fall, forcing Luke to catch it while Percy runs away with the fleece. He reaches the elevator and tries to close the door. Luke reaches his sword through and stabs Percy as the doors close.

Percy takes entirely too long to place the fleece over the wound, despite the rest of the episode showing him as being clever. Reuniting with Clarisse and Annebth on the deck, Percy sends Clarisse and the fleece back to camp atop Blackjack. Back on Long Island, Sally shows up in a blue Prius to drive the heroes back to camp. Percy questions whose car she’s driving, which indicates one of two things. Either Posieden gifted Sally a car to get the kids back to camp, or Sally is dating someone and driving their car. A bumper sticker that reads, “I’d rather be teaching,” indicates the latter in what might be the first call-forward.
The final scene of the episode shows Kronos torturing Luke inside his head after he questions why Kronos never mentioned the fleece could heal Thalia. Kronos instructs him to leave mercy behind, attack the camp, and kill the Son of Poseidon. Luke rises with a sinister look on his face, implying he’s past the point of no return. The only thing missing from this episode was the journey from Polyphemus’s island to Luke’s ship. With all the buildup toward them, it was disappointing to not actually see them apart from their heads. This could just be a budgeting issue or the show creators choosing to focus on practical sets rather than some CGI of the characters riding water horses. The character development, the mirror storylines between Clarisse and Percy, and the return of Sally made the trade-offs worth it. Outside of that letdown and Percy’s complete forgetfulness of his powers, there was little else to complain about in this episode. It made for a very satisfying setup for the season finale.
