Everyone up, and get on the floor, this story might have what you’re looking for. This week on Rick and Morty, everybody’s fired, there are dinosaurs on skateboards probably for the first time since around 1995, and there may or may not be a return.

The rift from the end of last to the beginning of this season is still open, and monsters are coming through portals. Rick can’t bring himself to fix it. As soon as Morty gets to school, those Arrival-esque spaceships descend on the planet, the beings disarm the army to reveal dinosaurs! They call a United Nations session to get the rundown on everything that’s happened in their absence. They evolved on Earth until their technology was “planetarily harmonious”, so they left to help world after world thrives over these millions of years. Now that they’re back, they offer to retake planet running duties, putting the world’s leaders on permanent vacation. They accept, and thus world peace is achieved! No, really! Food is plentiful, nothing costs money and all the jobs are taken care of. Humanity sits around having nothing to do. Web content creation took a hit too. Jerry gets started on his manuscript.

RELATED:

The President calls Rick for a barbecue and wants him to handle the dinosaurs. He agrees on the condition he gets to host the Oscars. He offers to transport the dinosaurs to an alternate earth with a portal, but they’re beyond that. They give Rick a more advanced portal pistol that shows the destination you’d be transported to. They even offer to patch up the interdimensional rift. Rick refuses explicitly for lore reasons, and the dinos use their helmets to transport him home, and he’s fed up with their perceived snobbery. He knows they have a secret and it’s now his mission to find out what.

He realizes Morty’s pamphlet about them has a map of their travels. Each planet had a meteor strike, causing the same mass extinctions as on Earth. Back on Earth, the dinosaurs hold a conference where they announce they will publish Jerry’s book globally but do not credit him. The meteors are devolved species with the bare minimum sentience that consider the dinosaurs their enemies. The dinos are devastated their work amounted to so little. Falling out of public favor and going on a press tour that includes Wendy Williams, Anderson Cooper, and Joe Rogan, the dinosaurs conclude they must leave to protect Earth’s people. The utopia collapses and everything is back to normal, with increased animosity against dinosaurs. The president revels in victory, and Rick hosts the Oscars but cuts it short upon learning the dinosaurs have settled on Mars to face their fate. He goes to talk to them. They claim he’s being petty and they’re selfless. He’s come prepared and can’t be sent back, so tyrannosaurus uses her helmet to blow up the meteor. “God beings to God beings” they then close the interdimensional rift, enraging Rick that its presence can’t be dragged out to linger. He’s so enraged that he then fixes portal travel! Classic episodes! Portals and wrecking shit! Here we go!

Seeing Beth and Space Beth act all datey during the Oscars bit was nice continuity. Of course, talking continuity one must discuss the closing of the rift and the portal system is back online after just 6 episodes. It is sudden and weird, but it does beg the question of whether having functional portal tech again means the adventures are going to get more storyline heavy or if it will be more standalone. With four episodes left in the season, Roiland’s interviews, and the finales lately have done so much for the show’s story, it could very well continue to be that way. The dinosaurs may have thrown Rick off his groove in such a way that his enthusiasm is for getting the plot on and going into canon. Rick Prime is now free to travel so a showdown must be coming. Either that or even more previously unintroduced repercussions will.

But hey, those episodes aren’t coming so soon! The show’s on break, aside from a Halloween short called “Summer’s Sleepover”, until November 20, which will finish up the season on December 11. The new Pocket Mortys avatars are the new trainer Beau from the restaurant and the new Mortys Triceratops Morty and Tyrant Lizard Morty. See ya next month!
