The season finale of Star Wars: Andor does not disappoint. This week’s episode again highlights Tony Gilroy’s ability to successfully weave real-world political themes and history into the tapestry of the Star Wars universe. Alongside his capability to build the show’s tension slowly throughout a three-episode arc; and an entire season in the case of the finale. Andor proves that the formula of prestige television can be successfully applied, start to finish, in the Star Wars universe.

Throughout the entire first season of Andor, fans have seen the political ideology of the early Rebel Alliance become more fleshed out as the show went on. The finale is no exception, pivotal moments in the episode focus on espousing these ideas more directly than previously. Going so far with these moments as to have characters monologue. But the speeches are interesting, well-written, and beautifully delivered. The key element? Resisting the Empire; together.

The way that Tony Gilroy has built tension throughout the first season of Andor has been brilliant. But no other episode is as great an example as Rix Road. The entire episode feels like it is at a tipping point. Everyone seems on edge, even if they have done nothing wrong. It makes the viewer feel like the walls are closing in around not only the heroes of the show but themselves as well. When the moment finally comes and the action begins to unfold, fans will have been looking for it around every corner for fifteen minutes.

Overall, the capstone of the first season of Andor continues to show the strengths of not only the showrunner but the idea that Star Wars isn’t just for kids anymore. The ideals of the Rebel Alliance in the early days were nowhere near as cut and dry as fans thought in ’77. Star Wars Andor is a proof of concept that, as the fanbase ages, these complex stories are in demand. Season 2 will have several stories to build on, like the extra credit scene for the eagle-eyed fan.
