The newest episodes of Velma have been released, and there is a ton of new information to cover! This will contain spoilers for episodes one - four!

This week’s episodes worked to answer many of the questions that have been introduced in the previous four episodes. The show mainly focuses on two core mysteries: what happened to Velma’s mom and who is killing the hot girls of Crystal Cove. However, last week’s episodes introduced a brand new mystery: who are Daphne’s real parents? This is the main focus of episodes five and six.

Daphne decides that it’s time for her to learn the truth about her real parents, so she travels back to the Crystal Mines that were introduced in last week’s episodes. Not only does she find her real parents, but her dad is a character that we have already met in earlier episodes. Unfortunately for Daphne, things are not always as they seem, and she learns that the hard way.

Velma is the absolute worst in this week’s episodes, and she truly doubles down on how selfish she is. After Daphne makes a groundbreaking discovery about her birth parents, she does everything she can to share the news with Velma. Unfortunately, Velma is more interested in her own problems and gives Daphne the cold shoulder. She also refuses to allow Daphne to tell Norville her news because she “needs him more”.  Now that Norville and Gigi are a couple, Velma is forced to acknowledge the fact that Norville was a phenomenal friend, and she took him for granted. This leads to quite a few hilarious moments and gives Norville his time to shine. We also learn the connection of Norville’s family with the Crystal Cove Asylum that was introduced last week.

This is the first time the episodes have connected all the mysteries that have been introduced during the show. It is revealed that Velma’s mom really is missing and that she is connected to the murders in a fascinating way that almost makes us wonder if she might actually be the murderer. We also discover the true root cause of Velma’s hallucinations, and it is finally confirmed that they are not supernatural. The cause is something that many people deal with, and it is an interesting way to explore the stigma attached to this “issue”. It is not common to have a show that is so self-aware, but it does make for a truly unique viewing experience.

This week’s episodes were a lot of fun, and they brought in a ton of classic Cartoon Network and Scooby-Doo characters and Easter Eggs. I am enjoying the formatting of these episodes. Each episode reveals something new while also introducing a new question or mystery. This formatting keeps the story flowing smoothly and makes audiences want to come back for more. This week’s episodes finally made it feel like we are going to get a more streamlined story and learn the truth behind all of the mysteries.

New episodes of Velma are available to stream on Thursdays on HBO Max
