How Saw Gerrera Could Show Up In 'Andor' Season 2

"Saw Gerrera is an extremist. He's been fighting on his own since he broke with the Rebellion. His militancy has caused the Alliance a great many problems." - Mon Mothma in Rogue One

When the various rebel cells united under the banner of the Rebel Alliance, its leaders imposed a kind of "moral compass" on how to fight the Empire, what was deemed a reasonable means to achieve the ends, and what deeds were regarded as too extreme, like endangering or sacrificing innocents or other rebels. Before that, some of these cells, like Hera Syndulla's Spectres, had already acted that way, while others, like Saw Gerrera's Partisans, followed a more Sidious-like approach: Do what must be done, do not hesitate, show no mercy.

In April of 2023, Forrest Whitaker, who has played Gerrera both in Rogue One and in season 1 of Andor, confirmed that he will be back for season 2, scheduled to be released next year on Disney+.

In his previous appearances in The Bad Batch, Andor, and the video game Jedi: Fallen Order, Gerrera has shown clear signs of both paranoia as well as his willingness to take extreme and ruthless measures, but so far, he had done nothing that would explain Mon Mothma's break with Gerrera and his Partisans.

The 2018 reference book Star Wars - The Rebel Files by Daniel Wallace includes the so-called "Resolution of Censure Condemning Saw Gerrera of the Partisans", a motion with which Mon Mothma formally excluded Gerrera and his group from the Rebel Alliance, due to their brutality, as their actions made the rebels look like extremists. According to The Rebel Files, Mothma made her resolution two years before the Battle of Yavin, which sets it three years after the events of season 1 of Andor.

As showrunner Tony Gilroy has confirmed, season two will include time jumps of roughly one year after each story arc of three episodes, right up until the start of Rogue One

So, one possibility for the return of Saw Gerrera would be that around two years BBY Mon Mothma sets in motion an important new strike against the Empire, and Luthen Rael travels to Gerrera to ask for his support. As season one of Andor has shown, the Partisans possessed several spaceships, so Gerrera's role could be to provide just air support, but as there is already a growing distrust from Mothma toward the Partisans, they are not allowed to engage further. The mission must still be important enough to raise Gerrera's interest, so the infiltration of an ISB base is a possibility. During the operation, Gerrera sees the opportunity to deliver an even harder blow against the Empire and deviates from the plans, maybe attacking the base, hoping to take out as many Imperials as possible while the other rebels are still in it. His actions could lead to not only rebels being injured or killed but also civilians, leading Mothma and Bail Organa to cut all ties with the Partisans.

Such a dramatically failed mission would allow Gilroy to check off another task on his to-do list. Rogue One showed Gerrera as a man who is not only mentally and emotionally but also physically broken (“There's not much of me left”, as he explains to Jyn Erso). He had a cybernetic right leg, an oxygen respirator, a pressurized suit of armor, and reinforced lungs, all things he didn't have in season one of Andor.

So, when Gerrera attacks the supposed ISB base, he gets shot down or is caught in the blast of his own explosives, leaving him terribly wounded and barely alive.

It would be a kind of irony if, of all things, it were Cassian Andor who would pull Gerrera out and save his life.
