Darkness rises, and light to meet it. Star Wars: Hidden Empire, the latest Star Wars comic miniseries from Charles Soule follows Qi’ra as she leads Crimson Dawn in a plot to assassinate Darth Sidious. Said plot involves the opening of a device known as the Fermata Cage. Built by ancient Sith Lord Darth Momin, the cage is said to contain the spirit of another long-dead Sith Lord, who Qi’ra plans to unleash on the Emperor. To accomplish this, Qi’ra had two of her follows, Kho Phon Farrus and the Archivist, attempt to open the cage with technology from a dark side cult called the Ascendant. However, their attempts failed and Qi’ra had the cage transferred to the Amaxine space station. If you’ve read The Rise of Kylo Ren comic from Charles Soule, you may recognize this as the home of Supreme Leader Snoke.

In that series, Ben Solo is called to the space station by Snoke, where he uses the station as an example of how the dark side can’t truly be contained. This is a reference to the High Republic novel Into The Dark by Claudia Gray, where the station is used by the Jedi to contain the Drengir, which in turn leads to the station being consumed by plants. Snoke uses this to demonstrate to Ben that rather than try to suppress the dark side within him, he should instead embrace it and allow it to turn him into something far stronger. At this point in the timeline that Hidden Empire is set, Snoke has yet to be created or to make himself at home on the Amaxine space station, but given the significance of the location, one can’t help but wonder if Snoke or the station’s history will be playing any kind of part in Qi’ra’s plan to unlock the cage.

Given how intimately connected Hidden Empire has been to the sequel trilogy thus far, I don’t think it’s unlikely that we could get some kind of connection or allusion to Snoke or even the Sith Eternal themselves. Personally, I’d like to see the station be utilized in terms of its holding of the Drengir and connection to the dark side. Perhaps Qi’ra will use the station’s unique place in the Force to aid in the opening of the cage. If the cage is opened on the station, that could also add to the station’s dark side power, motivating Snoke to make himself at home there in the first place. Snoke could even have used the cage’s residual power to draw Ben closer to the dark side during their first meeting. However Charles Soule ends up using the station in the remaining issues of Hidden Empire, there is sure to be some sort of awakening.
