Who Is Babu Frik?

“Hey heyyy” is a quote from the Anzellan creature Babu Frik. Fans first meet this little droidsmith in the ninth Star Wars film, The Rise Of Skywalker. Rey, Poe, and Finn seek out Babu Frik to repair C-3PO, and access the part of him that can speak the ancient Sith language. This, however, was not the last time we got to see the little Anzellan. While the name Babu Frik isn’t mentioned in the credits of The Mandalorian, the Anzellan we see in the episode checks all the familiar Babu Frik boxes, so it’s most likely him. He was not alone, however, and there were two other Anzellans with him. This little guy is extremely good in what he does, but we never really have been able to learn more about him, so who exactly is Babu Frik?

Babu Frik is an Anzellan droidsmith, who had his own workshop and worked with the Spice Runners of Kijimi. He speaks a heavily accented and fractured form of Basic, which is known as Anzellan. He is extremely talented in what he does and can reprogram or modify pretty much any droid, regardless of the security measures it had. After Zorii Bliss and Poe Dameron were inducted as Spice Runners, they brought a damaged droid, EV-6B6 to Babu Frik to repair, which he did. When Dameron eventually abandoned the group, Babu Frik helped him out and provided him with a holographic disguise matrix that enabled him to sneak off-world. Sometime after the Battle Of Crait the planet fell under First Order occupation and made life more difficult for the Spice Runners and Babu Frik.

During the events of The Rise Of Skywalker, Finn, Rey, Chewbacca, BB-8, and C-3PO find a Sith dagger, which had inscriptions on it. C-3PO was able to translate the inscriptions on the dagger, however, his programming prevented him from revealing what it said to anyone. At the recommendations of Poe, the group heads to Kijimi where they meet Babu Frik. If anyone could access C-3POs memory banks, it's Babu Frik. Babu Frik was able to bypass the security measures that prevented C-3PO from revealing what the dagger said. Even though C-3PO would lose his memory, he decided to go through with the procedure anyway. Babu Frik tinkered with the programming, and was able to access the memory, and reveal it to the group.

After the group left, Babu Frik contacted Jannah and the rest of the company on Kef Bir in the hope they would be able to aid the Resistance on their quest to find a Sith Wayfinder. While Babu Frik was busy working on a battle droid, Darth Sidious gave the order for Kijimi to be destroyed. However, Babu Frik was able to escape with the help of Zorii Bliss. The two of them later joined the countless other ships fighting the First Order on Exegol. Together they were able to destroy a  Xyston-class Star Destroyer during the battle. They later celebrated, and Babu Frik even joined the Resistance.

After his time with the Resistance, it is unknown how he and others of his kind ended up on Navarro. There also hasn’t been confirmation that it's actually Babu Frik, but it likely is him. We’ve also seen the Anzellans mentioned in Star Wars The High Republic: The Light Of The Jedi, which mentions that they have pure blood. They are heavily tied in with Poe Dameron’s backstory as well.

While the sequels are highly debated in the Star Wars fandom, hopefully, fans can agree that Babu Frik was a great addition to the Star Wars universe. He is a talented droid smith, and hopefully, we will see him again down the line, and let us hope next time he won’t be squeezed by Grogu.
