What The 'Ahsoka' Series Could Mean For The Future Of 'Star Wars' Shows

When Star Wars Rebels showed its final scene back in 2018, one question seemed to be everywhere. When and how would we see Sabine and Ahsoka’s hunt for Ezra Bridger? It seemed confirmed that such a story would be told in live action when Ahsoka first appeared in The Mandalorian, followed by the announcement of her own series. That was then confirmed with Dave Filoni talking about continuing the storylines developed by The Clone Wars and Rebels a year before the Ahsoka series arrived on Disney+.

It was an interesting move to bring these animated characters into live action. To tell this story, that those who dismissed the animated series as beneath them because ‘cartoons’ won’t have seen. No history. No idea of motivations. But it was a story that did get people invested. Want to go back to see the events leading to this moment. Which does raise an interesting question. Could the same happen again?

Before getting to that question, however, an understanding of what it means to continue the story into a different medium. The Mandalorian might have included characters such as Bo-Katan, continuing her story in live action, but that was still part of the journey of Din Djarin and Grogu. You couldn’t exactly call it a sequel series to The Clone Wars. With Ahsoka, it was very clearly a sequel series.

To start with, one of the main characters of Rebels continued to be a main character of Ahsoka. Sabine Wren had a large part to play in the events, along with the Togrutan Jedi. Ahsoka might have been a side character in Rebels, but she was an important part of the events she appeared in. Events that continued her story from The Clone Wars. Which Ahsoka then followed through with.

Other main characters of Rebels had their time to shine, with Hera Syndulla being involved in the events of Ahsoka. And Chopper. Jacen, the son of Kanan and Hera, who only appeared during that final scene of Rebels, gets a few scenes here. It is part of the events. With the main plot being to find Ezra and Thrawn, the two also come into play during the events that follow.

Fett and Bane

Though Ahsoka might take place in a different era, weave in new storylines, there is no mistaking that it is a continuation of all that Rebels set into motion. Which brings us back to the question. Could the same happen again? Could a story from another medium get continued as a live-action series? It’s something I’ve been thinking about, not only as one answer to providing fans with the stories of those cancelled The Clone Wars arcs.

One such arc from The Clone Wars that many would like to see is the one that features Boba Fett and Cad Bane as allies. The history between those two has already been shown in The Book of Boba Fett, which saw the two fight to the death. Why not resurrect the arc showing that history as a live-action series? Adding more than what the arc would have included to show the growing respect they have for each other. Before their showdown at the end of the arc.

Jedi Survivor Cal Kestis

Of the games released since Disney bought Lucasfilm, none can really have their stories continued. The story of the Star Wars Jedi games of Respawn is still ongoing, but there has already been a novel that provides more to that story set between the first two games. With where Survivor left the story, could there be room for a live-action series to tell the immediate events of that game?

Cal and Merrin on Tanalorr, now guardians of Kata, reflecting on the losses they suffered on the journey to find the hidden planet. And the betrayal of Kata’s father, who counts among those losses. The Mantis crew intended to make Tanalorr a base for those of The Path, who help Force-sensitives avoid the Empire’s eye. A series relating to The Path is something that fans have wanted to see since it was introduced in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Making it a sequel to Jedi: Survivor could be a good way of doing that.

Getting a character-focused series similar to Andor about the Clone Underground could prove an interesting one. Digging deep into how Rex and the other clones bring more of their brothers away from the grip of the Empire. Perhaps even seeing Senator Riyo Chuchi continuing her work in helping the network. The Bad Batch even has a great starting point for such a series, with Wolffe remembering Rex’s words at the B’Omarr Monastery on Teth before a mission he feels is wrong.

At present, no new live-action series are known about. There’s Ahsoka Season Two, which will likely show Thrawn’s rise and the New Republic’s response to that. But no fully new series. The slowing down of Disney+ content that CEO Bob Iger talks about for Marvel is likely also something the galaxy far, far away is following. As such, we likely won’t be seeing any new announcements until The Mandalorian & Grogu arrives in theatres next year.
