Those who have been keeping up with Andor may find themselves compelled to rewatch the entire series up through this week’s episode. The addition of Robert Emms to the cast has had his character (Lonni Jung) step out from the shadows in the most recent jaw-dropping installment of the popular gritty Star Wars spy fantasy, revealing a new twist on the Rebellion and those involved. Interestingly, we have seen Emms in other episodes as a seemingly background character, with little information about him other than that he is a high ranking ISB officer assisting Dedra Meero. So, who is Robert Emms portraying in Andor? Lonni Jung, a Rebel double agent deep undercover at the ISB. Why is he important? That answer is a little more complicated.

We now know how Luthen Rael is getting his information, and that it is not only accurate intel, but is coming straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak. This indicates that not only were there insiders of the Rebellion embedded in Aldhani itself, but that there are high ranking officials involved on the investigation side as well, thwarting advances where possible and leaking information to aid in the development of various missions. Lonni has found himself in a precarious situation from which he very much wants to escape. In a dramatic exchange with Luthen (and a powerful performance by Stellan Skarsgård), the audience learns that while Lonni is in fact a trustworthy ally to the Rebellion, he is also married, and his wife has just had a baby. The birth of his daughter understandably alters his priorities; he now realizes the danger to his own life extends to his young family, should the Empire find him out.

RELATED:

Luthen shows his face to Lonni for the first time since they began working together, to establish trust. He then goes on to deliver a speech about the sacrifices that are required to initiate changes for future generations. He describes his willingness to let fellow Rebels die for the cause, and refuses to intervene to save Kreegyr and his crew. He also refuses to let Lonni out. With Luthen threatening to out him, what is he supposed to do but stay undercover and hope the Empire doesn’t discover what he is up to?

This twist adds further depth to how fans may view the original trilogy as well. It is impossible to know at this point how many Rebels are, in fact, deep undercover. There is a high likelihood that Lonni is not the only ISB officer living the double life. This begs the question: how many ISB officers were rebels on the Death Star in A New Hope?

Star-Wars: Andor is currently streaming on Disney+.
