The universe of John Wick keeps expanding, this time with the addition of the spin-off film, Ballerina. It's an exciting, action-packed film, and Ana de Armas feels almost like a “little sister” of John Wick.
This movie takes place at the same time as John Wick 3: Parabellum, and even shows John Wick being made excommunicado by the High Table. This story, however, focuses on Eve Macarro, a ballet dancer, who grew up in the same organization that John Wick did. We get to learn more about the Ruska Roma organization and how they raise these children to become assassins. They do not mess around, and they will cut you off if they think you are not up to snuff. Eve learns about the cult that killed her father and makes it her mission to go after them.
The movie is just over two hours long and never wastes a minute. The first act is slow, as we learn about Eve’s backstory and her motives for why she decides to go on a killing spree. We see her work hard and rise through the Ruska Roma. The third act is where the movie really shines, and gives us some of the best action scenes of the film.

Ana de Armas plays the titular role of the Ballerina, Eve Macarro. She is much more expressive than the Baba Yaga himself. She is not the “female John Wick” by any means. Even though she was trained in the same organization as John Wick, she is still learning and struggles in all of her fights. She does adapt to her situation, however, and is able to make it out alive every time. Even though the trailer spoiled his involvement, it was nice to see that John Wick himself was more than just a cameo. I always love seeing Keanu Reeves reprise the role of John Wick, because it’s one of my favorite characters the actor plays. We also got to see the late Lance Reddick one last time as Charon, the Continental concierge.
The action never stops in this movie. It never gives the viewers a break. It’s exciting, and well done. One of the coolest scenes was a flamethrower fight during the third act of the film. There were some beautifully shot segments, such as the club scene, which was full of color. It was never hard to see what was happening, even in the darkest lit scenes. With the action comes violence, and some gruesome scenes, especially two with grenades. It’s not all serious, however; the movie knows how to have fun and throws in various humorous moments.

Eve Macarro is no John Wick, granted, John Wick is a hard standard to live up to. At one point, she even decides to fight him when she learns why he is there. It goes about as well as you think it would go for her. Eventually, the two part ways, so she can finish her mission. This entire sequence is quite fun, as it’s a town full of people who are trained in combat. Their children, however, are not, so Eve definitely left quite a few orphans after her various fights.
Ballerina is a wonderful addition to this universe. The action is exciting, and never gets boring. It gives us more insight into the universe, and we see it through someone other than John Wick. Ana de Armas shines as Eve Macarro. If you’re a fan of the franchise, then this is a must-see in your local movie theater.
