'Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune' Story Pack Spoiler-Free Review

To the surprise of this reviewer, A Pirate’s Fortune, the second Story Pack for Star Wars Outlaws, is much closer to a traditional DLC than the Story Pack format seemingly set out in Outlaws’ other main content release, Wild Card. With new characters, a brand new space-based location, and several new, engaging side quests, A Pirate’s Fortune is worth it for fans of Hondo Ohnaka, the High Republic, and the continuing story of Kay, Nix, and ND-5.
A Pirate’s Fortune features an immersive, twisting tale of pirate intrigue, a treasure from a culture last active during the High Republic era of the galaxy, and plenty of quips and context for events out of a returning Hondo Ohnaka. Hondo has been a relatively absent character in Star Wars canon in recent years, despite many believing he would be the perfect character to appear in any Mandoverse property. But, he is here in all his Hondo-ness, and we get callbacks to his exploits during the Clone Wars, and some subtle nods to recent events described in the 2020 Bounty Hunter comics that showed the Ohnaka Gang had recently dumped their leader. He is voiced by his original voice actor, Jim Cummings, and is a perfect translation of the character from other media.

The new content added with this Story Pack is also to be praised. Somewhat overlapping with the Khepi Tomb and the tales of that culture’s treasure is an expansion of the Miyuki Trade League, a faction players might remember from the base game for being merchants scattered across the map with basic trades available to players. Now, they are their own fifth faction, with a reputation track and rewards for the newest expansion to the gameplay: cargo smuggling!
The Mikyuki are smugglers who will take on jobs from each of the major syndicates and allow the player to do the same. The DLC’s main enemy faction, the Rokana Raiders, will often contest these pick-ups, and a range of effects can be triggered if the amount of cargo a player is hauling becomes unstable. The DLC also significantly expands ship combat, with new ship-specific “passive systems” similar to the charms Kay can equip that add certain effects to gameplay. The Trade League’s main base of operations, a space station, is also set in an entirely new region to explore with Kay’s starship, with a copious number of treasures to uncover.

Unfortunately, the DLC has a few drawbacks. Small glitches, while somewhat expected, dampened the impact of the final act for this reviewer when an effect on the screen remained active well after it should have been. Other details involve new gameplay elements of the DLC. While much of the content is explained well, with the story guiding a player through the Miyuki Trade League basics, another key moment of the story lacked a clear prompt to activate a key mechanic. These rough edges ended up slightly diminishing the incredible narrative accomplishments of A Pirate’s Fortune for this reviewer, but could represent singular struggles that may not impact other players.
Overall, A Pirate’s Fortune is an excellent addition to Outlaws. Without any announcements of more content at this time, this may be the last DLC for the game, which would be a shame. Still, if that is the case, it goes out on a high note, with new systems that round out the gameplay, and new content in the form of a great main story, side quests, wider lore, and an explorable location for the Trailerblazer to soar through.
