Mass Effect

The Mass Effect series is one of the most beloved game series ever. In three games, it tells the story of Commander Shepard saving the world from the Collectors. It’s a big, open world with a wide range of characters. You recruit some of these characters to help you on your mission because saving Earth requires more than one person. The characters you recruit all have different abilities and come from different backgrounds.

Some of course are fan favorites and are always used in playthroughs, and others just stay back on the Normandy for every mission. There are a lot of squadmates in the Mass Effect series, and some, of course, are better than others. These, well, let's just say you can leave them behind on the Normandy for the most part.

10. Legion

Probably one of the most underutilized squadmates in Mass Effect 2, but that’s only because you don’t acquire him until later in the game. He has one of the best stories in the game, considering he’s essentially a computer. He’s the first sentient Geth and was created to interact with the rest of the galaxy and deepen the Geth’s understanding of sentient life. Legion was an important find for Shepard, making his sacrifice in the third game even more heartbreaking.

9. Samara

A biotic asari who is recruited by Shepard to help her take down the Collectors. She is confident and has almost a millennium of experience under her belt. She is ruthless and bound by the Justicar code, which makes her extremely loyal to both the mission and the team.

8. Thane Krios

An alien assassin, who is looking to atone for all the killing he has done in his life. He doesn’t enjoy killing, even if he does a lot of it, but still takes time to pray over the bodies of his victims. Thane is effective at what he does and is great in combat.

7. Liara T’Soni

One of Shepard’s oldest friends. Dr Liara T’Soni is a scientist who makes an appearance in all three games, but is only a squadmate in two of them. Shepard and Liara remain close friends throughout all the games, and Shepard can even help Liara track down the notorious Shadow Broker.

6. Tali’Zorah

She is another squadmate you have on your team in all three games. Shepard and she are friends and will even help Tali when she is accused of treason. Tali is extremely capable and able to handle her own. She becomes an essential part of the team when they have to go after the Collectors.

5. Mordin Solus

Mordin is a doctor who helped create the genophage that caused the Krogans ' inability to reproduce. Shepard recruits him for his experience and background to help fight the Collectors. While Mordin isn’t the toughest of the squad, he certainly has one of the best stories in the game. He tries to write his wrongs and develop a cure for the Krogans that can be deployed in Mass Effect 3.

4. Urdnot Wrex

A powerful Krogan who grows to respect Shepard by the end of the series. While you only have him as a squadmate in the first game, different outcomes will determine whether or not he lives for the third game. He is extremely powerful and is essential to taking down Saren in the first game.

3. Jack

Jack is a loose cannon. Shepard rescues her from a prison, and is definitely rough around the edges, until you get to know her. Her biotic powers make her a tough fighter.  While she’s not a squadmate in the third game, you can see how she grew as a person and is now protecting the kids she teaches.

2. Grunt

One of the most unlikely companions in the game. Shepard picks up Grunt, a Krogan, on their homeworld of Tuchanka. They bring it back to their ship, where they have the option to wake the creature up. Waking up, Grunt should come with consequences, but he’s one of the best and strongest characters in the game. And seeing him grow through the games is also great.

1. Garrus Vakarian

Garrus is everyone’s favorite Turian and the most popular squadmate. He is one of the few companions with whom you have a squadmate in all three games. No matter what version of Shepard you play, Garrus always has your back. He’s also great at what he does, and you know that he won’t let Shepard down.
