5. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (2022 - 2023)

This installment in the long-running Gundam franchise is one of the first mainstream anime to feature an openly lesbian couple as the main protagonists. This is not the first installment in the franchise to feature LGBTQIA+ themes, but it is the one that has gotten the most attention. While not a romance anime, it does focus on the budding romance between Suletta and Miorine as they navigate their sci-fi world.
RELATED:
This anime follows Suletta Mercury, a compassionate young girl who enrolls herself in the Asticassia School of Technology in Planet Mercury, which is run by the Beneritt Group that creates robotic mobile suits.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury is available to stream in English and Japanese on Crunchyroll.
4. Heavenly Delusion (2023)

Heavenly Delusion doesn’t focus on same sex couples and instead leans into gender fluidity. Most of the characters in the anime do not have clear genders, leaving fans to make their own decisions about each character's identity. Another important aspect of the show is that when a character reveals their gender, they do not change their personalities. This anime shows that gender is not as important as society makes it out to be, and when someone does reveal their gender, they are not required to fit into any specific box.
Heavenly Delusion follows a group of children who have been raised in a facility that is isolated from the outside world. Fifteen years before the start of the anime, an unprecedented disaster destroyed modern civilization, making it a lawless wasteland. The focus of the show falls on two different stories: one that is taking place within the facility, where two children are contemplating leaving, and the other is taking place outside of the facility, where two children are searching for “Heaven”.
Heavenly Delusion, also listed as Tengoku Daimakyo, is available to stream in English and Japanese on Hulu and Disney+.

Cherry Magic! is an incredibly important anime for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community. It tackles the reality of realizing that you are interested in someone of the same sex, and trying to understand both your feelings and how it will impact your life. The anime does an incredible job of creating a fun story while being honest and respectful to everyone who has experienced this same situation.
The anime follows Adachi, who, on his 30th birthday, gains the ability to hear the thoughts of anyone he touches. As he struggles to understand his new power, he learns that his handsome coworker has a crush on him. Now he is trying to figure out how to navigate his new power, knowledge, and budding feelings.

2. Bloom Into You (2018)

Bloom Into You tackles both same sex relationships and what it means to be asexual. The anime leans into same sex relationships through the eyes of teenage girls. There isn’t a conversation about the fact that they are attracted to the same sex, and it is instead treated the way this should be, completely normal. The most important aspect of this anime is how it tackles the conversation about being asexual and how it impacts the person and the person who is in love with them.
Bloom Into You follows Yuu, who is obsessed with shoujo manga and dreams of the day that she will get her own love confession. Unfortunately, when her junior high classmate confesses his love to her, she feels nothing at all. After her teacher convinces her to join the student council, she meets Nanami, who begins to turn her world into something completely new.
Bloom Into You is available to stream in English and Japanese on HIDIVE and Hulu. HIDIVE also has an entire LGBT genre section.
1. Wind Breaker (2024 - present)
Wind Breaker is one of the best new anime, and a huge part of that is because of how they handle the differences of every character. It isn’t until season two that we get our first LGBTQIA+ character, and he is absolutely fabulous! Tsubakino is first confused for a girl by the main character of the series. We then get to see Tsubakino’s history and learn that while he leans into more feminine clothing and looks, he still identifies as a male and is interested in men. This is definitely the most complex LGBTQIA+ character we have gotten in anime so far because it leans into gender misconceptions and identity while also exploring what it means to be gay as a young adult, and how you can be a supportive ally to those around you.
Wind Breaker follows Sakura, who has recently moved and enrolled at Furin High School. He has always been looked down on and mistreated by those around him, but at Furin, he finds people just like him. The school and town are run by Bofurin, which is a group of teenagers who are excellent street fighters. Not only do they keep the town safe from gangs, but they also do community service to make sure their town is happy and beautiful.
Wind Breaker is available to stream in English and Japanese on Crunchyroll.
