As summer is beginning to heat up, some of us might not appreciate the high temperatures that are starting to head our way. Our minds may be pulled toward the winter months with their snow, ice, and winter sports. So, in order to keep cool, let’s take a look at the coldest planets in the Star Wars Galaxy.
5. Jedha

When we see Jedha in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, there are plenty of people out and about in the streets going about their business, but if you look closely, some of the people are dressed warmly, despite the desert surroundings. Even though the landscape is sandy and has mesas and mountainous terrain, Jedha has a very cold climate. This is comparable to deserts here on Earth: at night, deserts can get pretty chilly! Although it has a wintry climate, Jedha is still subject to sandstorms.

4. Ilum

More commonly known as Starkiller Base, this was a very remote planet in the Unknown Regions. It is shown in The Clone Wars and Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Its remoteness is, of course, the reason why the First Order chose it to implant its premier weapon, Starkiller, inside it. Due to its arctic climate, there were no lifeforms that permanently lived there, but in the time of the Republic, young Jedi journeyed there to harvest kyber crystals during the Gathering. After the rise of the Empire, Imperial workers mined the planet incessantly for its kyber crystals to use for the Death Star. These excavations paved the way for the First Order to move into the planet - literally. Beneath the icy surface, there was volcanic activity that created geysers, which the Empire also exploited for their geothermal energy. Ilum’s surface was a winter wonderland of ice plains, glaciers, and forests that were able to poke out of the snow. This planet got destroyed in the Resistance’s attack on Starkiller Base in 34 BBY, but its implosion caused it to be reborn into a star.
3. Scipio

Scipio features in The Clone Wars, where it houses a very important vault of the Intergalactic Banking Clan. It is easy to see why such an important vault would be located here: Scipio is a very frigid planet, with icy mountains and cold air. Its inhospitable climate makes it a good hiding place. With such an inhospitable climate, who would think to look here? Unfortunately, Chancellor Palpatine is aware of everything, and when Rush Clovis uncovers the plot where the contents of the vault are being embezzled to different accounts through the Banking Clan, the Separatists invade, and Clovis is killed in the fighting. This paves the way for Palpatine to take over the Banking Clan, showing that even the extreme climate cannot provide cover from the Dark Side’s ominous threat.
2. Barton IV

This Outer Rim planet is featured in The Bad Batch, Season Two, Episode 12. It is home to an Imperial outpost, but aside from some local raiders, there is not much there. Barton IV’s terrain includes mountains and caves; it is snow-covered with very cold air. Even the names of the animals that are native to the planet attest to its frigid climate: black ice vultures are in the skies, and ice wyrms burrow underground. Every so often, there can be a snow avalanche. Due to its inhospitable climate, the Imperials eventually abandoned this outpost, which was used to store armor and other supplies.
1. Hoth

This is the first cold planet we see, in contrast to the desert of Tatooine or the jungle of Yavin IV, the only planets featured in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Hoth is the first glimpse that the Star Wars galaxy is indeed that, a whole galaxy, with different landscapes, climates, and obstacles unique to each setting. The frigidly cold climate is the obstacle that the Rebel Alliance faces, and it is because of this climate that they picked Hoth in the first place to hide from the Empire. It is so cold that the commanders of the Rebel Base have to shut down the base at night. When Luke Skywalker is out in the harsh Hoth night, C-3PO gives his odds of survival as “725 to 1”. When Han Solo goes out to find Luke, the arctic climate is too much even for the native Tauntaun he rides. Other animals, namely the Wampa, have thick, white fur that is insulating against the cold and camouflages them against the snowy terrain. It is the cold, desolate planet of Hoth that makes the Number One spot on this list.
So, there you have it! While many of us are baking in a heat wave, hopefully this list will help cool you off!
