George R.R. Martin is done holding his tongue. In a recent blog post—equal parts announcement and airing of grievances with his very opinionated fanbase–the Game of Thrones author didn’t mince words when it came to how he feels about his ever-demanding group of followers.
The post came alongside news of his newest creative venture, A Dozen Tough Jobs, an animated feature film based on the book by Howard Waldrop, Martin’s close friend, who passed away. The book reimagines the twelve labors of Hercules from a fresh Southern perspective, set during the 1920s in Mississippi. Yet, alas, if the internet community is good at anything, it is raining on Martin’s parade; however, this time, Martin is carrying his proverbial umbrella.

“I know, I know,” Martin wrote. “Some of you will just be pissed off by this, as you are by everything I announce here that is not about Westeros or The Winds of Winter.” And Martin didn’t stop there. In a moment of rare, almost scathing honesty, he directly addressed the continued chorus of fans who’ve expressed their frustration with the delays in his long-promised A Song of Ice and Fire finale.
“You have given up on me, or on the book,” he continued. “I will never finish WINDS. If I do, I will never finish A DREAM OF SPRING. If I do, it won’t be any good. I ought to get some other writer to pinch hit for me…”
The post continues to rattle off a list of Martin’s lesser-known (yet more personal) works like Dying of the Ligh, This Tower of Ashes and Old Venus, only to undercut it all with a line that stings more than a White Walker blade: “You don’t care about any of those, I know. You don’t care about anything but Winds of Winter. You’ve told me so often enough.”
It’s a moment of unfiltered fatigue from an elder author, an industry legend publicly battling fan expectations, his creative passion, and the daunting weight of his legacy. Whether Martin’s bluntness will cool the jets for overly passionate fans is anyone’s guess.
