The television adaptation of The Last of Us quickly became a hit, capturing the hearts of longtime fans of the game and new fans alike. A second season was greenlit after the release of episode two. In an interview with GQ, co-creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin hinted at the direction being taken for adapting the game’s sequel.

Everything is in its early stages still, so specific details have yet to be released. While the creators don’t explicitly promise a specific number of seasons, in response to the question of the second season encompassing “the entire course of the second game,” their answers were promising. Mazin gave firm denial while Druckmann stated, “It’s more than one season.”

The estimated playtime for The Last of Us is about 23 hours, according to IGN. The playtime for The Last of Us Part II is a good bit longer; IGN states an average of 32.5 hours to finish it. No matter how long it takes an individual to get through each game, the sequel has more content and takes longer to get through as a result. Squeezing that much content into a single season of the same format as the first would be quite a feat; multiple seasons for the adaptation would provide the breathing room required to tell the story.

The entirety of The Last of Us season one can be streamed now on HBO Max. A release date for season two has not yet been announced.
