The well known video game franchise Wolfenstein has a TV series in development at Amazon’s Prime Video.
One of several video game-focused projects in development with Prime, Wolfenstein is a game series that has often focused on American soldier William “B.J.” Blazkowicz in an alternative World War II and post-war world killing Nazis through an array of locales and bases. The modern remake/reimagining of the series, which began with 2014’s Wolfenstein: The New Order and continued with 2017’s The New Colossus, were both well received by many fans and critics. The most recent major game in the revitalized series, a spinoff entitled Wolfenstein: Youngblood, did not garner much positive reception unfortunately and the series has been quiet ever since.
As for who is behind this new TV series, Patrick Somerville is attached as show creator, writer, executive producer and showrunner. He’s previously worked on the well-received shows Maniac and Station Eleven, and has apparently been a fan of the franchise since childhood. Various other names are linked to the project due to the involvement of multiple companies, such as Kilter Films, with Jonah Nolan, Lisa Joy, and Athena Wickham attached as executive producers.
While all of this news is intriguing, fans of the franchise have been down this road before. 2012 saw the announcement of a Wolfenstein film in the works, but the project never moved forward. Hopefully, this series does move forward, and the compelling, action-packed universe of Wolfenstein makes it to the small screen, joining other successful video game adaptations.
