As fans await the newest The Lord of the Rings movie, The Hunt for Gollum, rumors are starting to fly. Andy Serkis, director and motion capture actor for Gollum, put some of those rumors to rest. Serkis confirmed that Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragon in Peter Jackson’s film trilogy, will not be returning for the role. He clarified, “I don’t know what’s out there at the moment, but I know there’s a lot of speculation, but let’s just say we are recasting the role and we are on the way to finding someone. English actor Leo Woodall has been floated as a potential replacement, but that is still just rumor with no official confirmation.
Fans are also wondering about Kate Winslet’s role. She has been cast as the female lead, but there is no word on her character yet. When asked about her role, Serkis responded, “We’ve got to keep it all back. I mean, look, other than, I think it’s probably common knowledge, but our film takes place between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and it’s The Hunt For Gollum, and it is a physical hunt for the character, but also a psychological hunt for himself.” Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood are rumored to reprise their roles as Gandalf and Frodo, but that has yet to be confirmed. The Hunt for Gollum will be released in theaters on December 17, 2027.
