Disney recently announced that a planned D+ streaming series continuing the story of Disney’s 2016 animated hit, Moana, starring Auli’i Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Maui, is instead being converted into a film, Moana 2, set for a November 2024 release. Not only that, but Disney announced that they will be releasing a live-action adaptation of Moana, though it is not currently known how the release of the animated sequel will affect the live-action version.

Both Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson are set to reprise their respective roles in the animated sequel, and Johnson is expected to also reprise his role as Maui in the live-action adaptation. Cravalho will only executive produce the film, while another actress will assume the titular role of Moana.

RELATED:

Moana 2 will be directed by Dave Derrick Jr. and feature music and songs by Mark Mancina, Abigail Barlow, and Opetaia Foa'i. Lin Manuel Miranda will not be contributing to the animated sequel film.

The film is expected to debut in theaters on November 27, 2024. Hamilton’s Thomas Kail will direct the live-action adaptation. The original Moana writer, Jared Bush, wrote the new screenplay for the live-action adaptation with Dana Ledoux Miller.
