Hollywood has been rocked by the sudden death of costume designer Shawna Trpcic at just 56 years old on October 4th, 2023.  California-born Trpcic was thinking of becoming a truck driver before a persistent art teacher persuaded her to pursue the arts. She became a staple member of the Star Wars family after a tour at Skywalker Ranch led to a meeting with George Lucas. A die-hard fan of the saga, the job offer that followed was the realization of a dream. Shawna Trpcic worked on Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, and the last two seasons of The Mandalorian, achieving recognition with three Prime Time Emmy nominations. The Ahsoka spacesuit will no doubt land a fourth.

Shawna Trpcic was responsible for some of the most iconic science fiction looks of the 90s and 00s, via Angel, Dollshouse, Torchwood, and Firefly. From the Kaylee Fry shindig gown to the Wesley Wyndam-Pryce biker jacket. Trpcic was no stranger to the big screen, and she designed the costumes of horror flick The Cabin in the Woods, and Revival starring Michelle Williams.

Always playful, and a fan of easter eggs, her trademark was the pink flamingo, and she craftily tried to sneak these into her designs whenever she could.

Actress Ming-Wa Nen aka Fennec Shand posted on Instagram “She was always there for her actors. Her designs helped us to tell the stories and establish the characters. She worked tirelessly, passionately, and with such great humor. We had so much fun together.”

She is survived by her son Joseph and her daughter Sarah. A GoFundMe has been set up to help her family in this trying time.
