Ben Barnes has made a name for himself by portraying some of the most twisted villains throughout his career, but Barnes’ dream role would allow him to play the dark and brooding hero. In a new interview with Collider, Barnes revealed his childhood dream of playing the role of Batman. Barnes expressed his interest in stepping into the shoes of Gotham’s Guardian during a Panel at FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention and revealed that his parents still have the proof of how much he adored Batman as a kid. He confessed that most of the home videos his parents have of him show him dressed as the Caped Crusader: “I was actually watching some— my parents just visited me, and they bought some like little kid videos, and we were watching some old family videos. And in every single one, I was dressed like Batman or Robin Hood. I think there may have been a Spider-Man one, but it was mainly Batman.”
Oddly enough, most of the characters Barnes has played in his career would be on Batman’s hit list. The actor first gained recognition as the heroic Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy, but since then, most of his most appreciated performances have come as villains. Barnes impressed as the Logan Delos in Westworld, as Billy Russo inMarvel’s The Punisher, and as ‘The Darkling’ in Netflix’s Shadow and Bone. Even though he received widespread recognition for playing twisted villains, Barnes admitted he wants to change things up. His most recent performance was a cop in MGM+’s adaptation of Stephen King’s 2019 novel, The Institute, which has been renewed for a second season. In case he ever gets the opportunity to live out his childhood dream of playing Batman, the actor says he would be ready to accept, and “Just call me, I’ve got Bruce Wayne ready to go."

There’s currently no official news about Ben being cast as The Dark Knight, but an opportunity could arise in James Gunn’s DCU with projects like Andy Muschietti’s film The Brave and the Bold. Matt Reeves’ The Batman, starring fellow English actor Robert Pattinson, will continue to exist outside the DCU as an “Elseworlds” story, but if Barnes does get cast as Batman in the DCU, he would have earned it. He’s used to playing complex characters, but fans would be curious to see how he could set himself apart from Pattinson’s Batman. Pattinson revealed that he doesn’t consider Batman a hero and prefers to see him as someone who’s a bit of a freak and an outcast. Would Ben Barnes lean into Bruce Wayne’s darker history, or would he portray Batman as an outright hero? If he gets that call as Batman, fans would get to see his interpretation firsthand, revealing how he would balance the Bat’s duality.
