Game studios are notorious for keeping development projects under wraps, but Blizzard Entertainment has decided to buck the trend by announcing their plans in a series of MCU-like phases at BlizzCon. This includes the Worldsoul Saga, a new story arc for World of Warcraft that will be rolled out over three expansion packs. Diablo 4 is also getting its first expansion, and a new hero for Overwatch 2 was also announced at the event. Openness appears to be the new Blizzard company policy. In an interview with IGN, Executive Producer Holly Longdale said:

We exist because of the communities we have, and our fans are so dedicated as you’ve probably seen here at BlizzCon. They just want information, they just want to know what we’re doing and what’s coming.”

As Marvel has discovered, being so transparent with fans is a double-edged sword. Frequently, not everything that has been promised can be produced and the product’s brand can be damaged by minor changes. For example, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries is on its third title. However, letting fans know what is in the pipeline gives them time to get excited. It helps them make choices based on whether a franchise is going to be developed, or if it's simply a one-shot. Diablo has several books tied into the world of Sanctuary. Knowing that titles are going to continue to be released may encourage people to delve further into the backstory.

It’ll be interesting to see if any other studios follow Blizzard’s lead.
