Anthony Head, who portrayed Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died aged 72 owing to complications from pneumonia. His daughters, Daisy and Emily, said it was a peaceful death and that he was surrounded by his family in a statement on June 5.
Born as Anthony Stewart Head in London on February 20, 1954, he attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, with one of the earliest productions he played a part in being a 1978 production of Godspell. A few years later, he would star in the film Lady Chatterley’s Lover, along with making many guest appearances on British TV series. And also as one half of the Gold Blend coffee adverts alongside Sharon Maughan.
His most famous role would come with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a series which he would star in for all seven seasons. As he revealed in an interview in 2016, the production team were accommodating to allow him time to see his family during his time filming for it. Later roles would see him star in series such as Ted Lasso, Little Britain, Merlin, and Free Agents (both Channel 4 original and NBC remake).
Head’s wife, Sarah Fisher, died late December, 2025. The statement from his daughters, Daisy and Emily, reveals, “It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many. We know how dearly he will be missed by friends, colleagues, and fans of the shows he was in.”
It continues with, “He loved his job very much, and he always considered himself incredibly lucky to have been able to work alongside such exceptionally talented people, in such wonderful productions, across a career that spanned several decades.”
