Have you recovered from Hugh Jackman’s death scene in Logan? We hope so, because it’s entirely possible he will deliver maximum emotional damage in The Death of Robin Hood –in the best possible way, of course. Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One) and A24 have teamed up to tell a grittier version of the famous Robin Hood, with none other than Hugh Jackman bringing the titular character to life. The premise steps away from the folklore surrounding Robin of Locksley to present a darker story centered on an aging, wounded Robin, confronted with his own mortality and violent history.

Following a brutal battle in which he is unlikely to survive his injuries, Jackman’s antihero will be seen seeking redemption for his past sins. Sarnoski sat down with THR to talk about the movie and warned that his goal for audiences after the fight scenes in the first third is to “be a little disturbed by it.” It appears that Robin will seek refuge from Sister Brigid, played by Jodie Comer. The dynamic between these two characters is confrontational, suggesting their complex history to contend with. The supporting cast includes Bill Skarsgård as Little John, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe.

Sarnoski explained to THR that he took an indie approach in making the film, meaning it isn’t intended to be a huge epic, but rather an intimate, highly character-driven movie. Much of the filming for The Death of Robin Hood was done on location in Ireland. The filmmaker praised Hugh Jackman throughout his interview, mentioning the actor’s kindness and the energy he brings to set. He said that the Deadpool & Wolverine star commented that the last time he made a movie at such speed was his first indie in Australia over 30 years ago.

Sarnoski said, “I know it was rough for Hugh. It was muddy. He tweaked his neck. But he was enjoying it — he liked how fast we were shooting,” In fact, Jackman “was like, ‘We’re on fire, we’re moving.’ Additionally, he discussed casting the X-Men alum and the nuance he brings to his performance as Robin Hood.  “Hugh has done Wolverine, he’s done action — I knew he could do the aggressive, violent side of this. But he’s such a warm, kind person that no matter what, we can have him do all the horrible things we want in the movie — and those moments when you see kindness in him feel really real.”

The Death of Robin Hood hits theaters June 19!
