Bungie’s next game, a reboot of the Marathon IP in the form of an extraction shooter, has been delayed.
Announcing this delay on June 17th, 2025, the news post on the Bungie website is full of statements that many prospective players should feel good to hear. Marathon’s recent reveal and the subsequent alpha test did not go as smoothly as some would have hoped. Rarely of a technical nature to do with server issues or connection problems, the issues instead mostly stemmed from player feedback regarding the gameplay loop and other elements of the extraction shooter model that people believed needed fine-tuning when it came to Marathon.
The Bungie post acknowledged these concerns and thanked players for their feedback through various channels. The post then highlighted that the focus will be on adjusting various gameplay elements, such as combat against AI enemies, combat in general, and the addition of features like a proximity chat. They also noted changes regarding how the team intends to tell the story and lore of the universe, with a shift toward a darker tone that befits the original games in the franchise.
The blog post ended with a statement that more information and a new release date will be revealed this fall. While it is unfortunate to see such a delay, Marathon can only benefit from listening to the feedback of the players and fans who want to enjoy the experience Bungie is creating.
