Charlize Theron is an actress with long-standing roots in the action genre. From playing Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) to Lorraine Broughton in Atomic Blonde (2017) to the titular character in Æon Flux (2005) and more, she has been in the game for a while. The actress has seen plenty of the unequal treatment of its stars in the genre. In an interview with The New York Times, Theron discussed the double standard present in the industry for female action leads.
On the difficulty of getting female-led action films greenlit, the actress stated, “Yeah, it’s harder. That’s known. Action films with female leads don’t get greenlit as much as the ones with male leads. I think the thing that always frustrates me is the fact that guys will get a free ride.” She continued, “When women do this and the movie maybe doesn’t hit fully, they don’t necessarily get a chance again. With this, we were very aware that eyes were on us. It’s not a risk that studios want to take, but they’ll take it many times on the same guy who might have a string of action movies that did not do so well.” Theron sees a disparity in opportunity and the willingness of studios to gamble on a lead between men and women, and is bringing more attention to the subject.
