It’s always sad when attractions close. The latest closures at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom have been announced, with the sun setting on attractions that have been active in the park since 1973. The Liberty Belle steamboat and Tom Sawyer Island have been closed, along with Rivers of America, which has been part of the park from when it opened in 1971, to make way for a new area of the park.
The Piston Peak National Park will be the “largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom.” As announced by Disney last month, this new area will continue the storytelling tradition popular with attractions located at the Frontierland and Liberty Square areas.

Other Magic Kingdom additions include the reopening of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad next year, the pirate themed Beak and Barrel lounge, the Disney Starlight nighttime parade spreading magic across Main Street, and an area inspired by Disney villains that will bring two major attractions to the park along with new dining and shopping options in a darkly magical aesthetic.
