As we have just celebrated Father’s Day weekend, it’s fitting to spotlight arguably one of the best fathers in the galaxy far, far away. Of course, that dad hero is Bail Organa, sorry, Anakin! While Vader may have eventually found his redemption arc, he certainly was never going to be boasting a Best Dad Ever coffee mug aboard the Death Star. Uncle Owen was a strong contender, but Rebecca Roanhorse’s upcoming novel, Star Wars: Edge of the Abyss (Reign of the Empire), focuses on fatherhood through Bail Organa’s eyes and the loving relationship between him and his adopted daughter, Leia. Inverse shared an exclusive peek at the novel with a Father’s Day-friendly excerpt.
Roanhorse’s story takes place during the Reign of the Empire era, just before the events of the first season of Andor. The excerpt showcases a shift from the era’s usual darker themes to a special father/daughter moment between Senator Organa and a 13-year-old Princess Leia on their home planet of Alderaan. Their discussion centers on a popular singer in the galaxy, with Leia seemingly perplexed by the singer’s song and popularity. Bail explained to Leia that the singer’s content is relatable and, as such, makes others feel seen. Leia immediately tied that back to politics, her father's work, and her desire to grow up and follow in his footsteps.
“As a senator, it’s your job to give a voice to the citizens of Alderaan. Those who might not have a voice otherwise. Or simply don’t know how to say the things that need to be said to the people who need to hear them. Being a senator is a duty, but it’s also a talent.” –Princess Leia Organa

This is before the confident senator/princess we all know… Roanhorse uses that moment to show Leia’s youth and her concern about frightening her parents. Leia goes on to express her desire to join the Apprentice Legislature, the first potential steppingstone toward her destiny in the Imperial Senate. The excerpt Inverse chose highlights Bail’s internal conflict—no parent wants to see their child in danger. This, of course, is set after her kidnapping. But rather than shelter her, he chooses empowerment and support. The link to read the full excerpt is listed below, as is a link to preorder the novel from Random House.
