There was speculation about who could play the next James Bond for a long time now, but till now, one name was notably absent from the discussions - Robert Pattinson. That changed this weekend when The Hollywood Reporter revealed that The Batman himself screen-tested as the next James Bond. Almost all of social media immediately rallied behind Pattinson as the perfect man for the role, but up till now, there was no hint that the British thespian was in the running. Pattinson reportedly auditioned for the part on October 24, and he wasn’t alone; Nicholas Hoult, Josh O’ Connor, Callum Turner, and Jack Lowden. Fans online haven’t seemed as enthusiastic about anyone other than Pattinson, with many saying they didn’t think Turner, O’ Connor, and Lowden possessed the aura for Bond like previous actors, including Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, and Sean Connery.
Nicholas Hoult was a runner-up for the role of The Batman years ago but lost to Pattinson. Now the duo is competing with three others for James Bond, and history might repeat itself if Pattinson’s stardom has any say in the final decision. Pattinson was filming Tenet when he auditioned for Batman, and even though he tried to keep it a secret, Christopher Nolan was able to figure it out. He may have been able to audition for James Bond because filming on The Batman: Part II was paused last month because of Matt Reeves stepping away to address a family issue. There’s no confirmation on how the auditions went and who was ultimately chosen, although the internet has been peppered with rumors from sources like The Sun, claiming that Josh O’ Connor may have bagged the role. O’Connor isn’t a popular choice among fans, who seem overwhelmingly in favor of Pattinson bagging the role of the iconic spy and adding another feather to his cap. The next Bond movie will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, who directed Pattinson in Dune: Part Three, which will be released in theaters everywhere next month.
