Grand Admiral Thrawn as a character grabbed people’s attention when he was first introduced in Star Wars Rebels. His tactics and desire to understand his enemy from a cultural level to defeat them brought a unique vibe to the Imperial. With his introduction to the live-action Universe and the conclusion to the first season of Ahsoka, fans have been wondering what’s next. In Empire’s Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes issue, Dave Filoni and Lars Mikkelson discussed Thrawn’s future in the Star Wars Universe.

Filoni indicated his interest in pushing forward with Thrawn, explaining a previously established connection, “We set up Captain Pellaeon in The Mandalorian, and that’s a character that goes with Thrawn, so I’d love to see the two of them together.” He also indicated a creative direction they may take when discussing a dynamic that he enjoyed creating, “His foil throughout Rebels was Hera. Pitting the two generals against one another is something that I find interesting.”

Lars Mikkelson, Thrawn’s live-action actor, commented on the future of the character and his goals, “Straighten out all the others and tidy up the shop. I could imagine something in terms of a power play within the Empire.” The remnants of the Empire are still in play, and its power structure may go through the wringer as old vs new join together and struggle for dominance; of course, only time will tell.

The future slate of Star Wars series set during the New Republic era is a bit slim, with Skeleton Crew being the only project on the immediate horizon. If season two of Ahsoka and season four of The Mandalorian do come out, it won’t be for a while; the current entirety of both shows can be streamed on Disney+.
