Disney+ Renews 'X-Men '97' For Season 3

After Disney acquired Fox Entertainment, which included the X-Men franchise, Marvel Studios created a new animated X-Men series based on the original X-Men: The Animated Series, which ran on Fox Kids between 1992-1997. The new series, entitled X-Men ‘97, premiered on Disney’s flagship streaming service, D+, in 2024 and has run for two seasons (Season 2 ended in August) and has now been renewed for a third season, demonstrating the series’ popularity. X-Men ‘97 serves as an official modern-day continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series, which originally ran from 1992-1997. A teaser for Season 3 was recently unveiled at New York Comic-Con.
Marvel producer Kevin Feige laid out two important conditions for the new series before greenlighting it, specifically, the original surviving voice cast had to return and the rights to the theme song for the original X-Men animated series had to be acquired. This is Marvel Studios’ first project featuring the X-Men, although various X-Men characters such as Professor X and Jean Grey have made recent appearances throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe in projects such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), and are expected to appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday (2026). Their increased presence in these projects is laying the foundation for the franchise’s planned reboot under the Marvel Cinematic Universe banner.

Season 3 of X-Men ‘97 is expected to premiere next year. Marvel TV head, Brad Winderbaum, has gone so far as to say that Season 4 will premiere the following year, in 2028, ending the pattern of an extended gap such as that which occurred between Seasons 1 and 2.
