Will The Avengers Fight The X-Men In 'Avengers Doomsday'?

Even before Disney acquired Fox, cinema fans would imagine the X-Men facing off against the MCU’s Avengers. Now, many fans are convinced or hoping that this showdown becomes reality in Avengers: Doomsday. The last several MCU projects have focused on establishing the multiverse, so it’s not so far-fetched that it could happen. The creators held a livestream that showed the names of actors on director chairs. The usual suspects were there like Robert Downey Jr. (Dr. Doom), Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards), Sebastian Stan (Buckey Barnes), and Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson). But the chairs included surprising names of actors who played characters in the Fox X-Men movies like Kelsey Grammar (Beast), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Patrick Stuart (Charles Xavier). Viewers even got a glimpse of the Fox incarnations of the X-Men at the end of The Marvels, so they have been established on screen.
A much more compelling on-screen example is the full-length Deadpool & Wolverine, with Hugh Jackman reprising his Wolverine role. This is the first Deadpool movie to be included in the MCU, and saw the pair dealing with the Time Variance Authority introduced in Loki. Both Multiverse of Madness and No Way Home introduced incursions that allowed characters from other universes to enter the MCU. Rumors of a fight between Toby McQuire’s Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine are circulating online, along with a rumored leaked trailer showing an actual fight between the X-Men and the Avengers at the X-Mansion.

It’s always best not to take too much stock in rumors, but the MCU already has every established character needed to make this fight a reality. In fact, the youngest character, Franklin Richards, is the most likely key to make this happen. In the comics, Franklin is established to have great power and can even create pocket universes. At the end of Fantastic Four: The First Steps, Dr. Doom is shown talking to Franklin. If he captures Franklin in this moment, he can use his power to create a pocket universe where he’s in control, which closely parallels the Doomsday comics.
Using Franklin’s power to manifest reality along with Dr. Doom’s clever manipulation tactics, they could easily trick the groups into fighting each other. If each group was under the impression that they had to win to prevent their universe from being destroyed, that would make them more likely to face each other. We’ve seen groups of heroes fight before in disagreement about the Sokovia Accords, and when the Avengers encountered the Guardians of the Galaxy in space, their solution was to fight first and ask questions later. The Avengers aren’t always the most prepared going in, so this kind of manipulation would be easy. Another twist would be if the Fantastic Four joined the fray, trying to rescue Franklin from Dr. Doom. Having three famous groups of heroes all facing each other would be an ambitious crossover scene even for the MCU.

Another Marvel series, What If?, included some X-Men characters in its final season, like Storm. Another series, X-Men ‘97, is separate from the MCU but is still being produced by Marvel Studios. This established the characters for Marvel fans who may have missed the earlier Fox movies. With all of the buildup of both sets of characters in recent years, a clash between them, whether in Doomsday or in future Avengers projects, seems inevitable.
Keep in mind, though, that some teasers take a while to make it into the overarching story. Thanos was teased in the second Avengers movie, but we had to build up several other characters like Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Dr. Strange, and Ant-Man, among several others, before he emerged as the main threat. The X-Men characters were teased in a movie from 2023, which is still one of the most recent Marvel films, with only Deadpool & Wolverine, Captain America: Brave New World, Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Thunderbolts released since then. This summer will add Spider-Man: Brand New Day to that lineup before Doomsday releases at the end of the year. If the fight doesn’t show up in Doomsday, there’s still time for the heroes to face each other in Secret Wars, and no amount of media content will keep fans from pitting famous characters against each other in what-if situations.
